I am extremely delighted to introduce you to the newest member of our family, meet Mr. Darcy, our new dachshund-pomeranian puppy. My daughter has been pining for a dog for about two years. For a long time I just wasn’t ready for one, a dog is a giant responsibility, and I just haven’t been up for it. As Emma’s been getting older and showing signs of being able to take on more responsibility I began to relent.
Because we live in a small townhouse, I knew I was only willing to get a small dog — which limits the field of choices significantly. Periodically I would go online to the local shelter websites and Craigslist to see what I could find. I’ve always owned big dogs and there seems to be an abundance of those, so my search continued. Last week, during that epic snowstorm, I happened to check out Craigslist and up popped this adorable little puppy.
The owner said he had already had a lot of interest in the puppy and that someone was coming to get him that night. My daughter and I were sad but we just kept praying that God would bring us the right pup at the right time. Then, that night, I got an email asking if we still wanted him – with a resounding YES! I quickly texted my neighbor asking her to join us in going to meet this dog to see if we would “click” with him. It was undoubtedly love at first sight for all of us!
At just 7 pounds, he is precisely the right size for my girl. Aren’t they too adorable for words?! He is five months old and I’m hoping he won’t get too much bigger, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
I am over the moon in love with him too. I have a sweet carrier bag that I use to tote him around with us. He is with us almost all of the time which is great because the few times we leave him alone he gets pretty upset. Fortunately he’s so tiny that any destruction and “accidents” have been minimal. We’re really working on potty training. Any tips you have are welcomed!!
When it came to naming him, my daughter threw out a few interesting suggestions including “Blast Board,” I honestly don’t know where that one came from… Being the enormous Jane Austen fan that I am, I of course knew instantly what I wanted to name him. Thankfully my daughter is quite easy going and Darcy was unanimously passed!
My cat was pretty upset at first but slowly she is coming around. Tonight the four of us actually all sat on the sofa together! I’ll be back tomorrow with a beautiful winter white tablescape, but in the meantime, thank you for indulging me as I introduced you to our new boy!
