Let’s Dream Big New Year’s Goals together! Every year I get really excited about goal setting. I’m not much of a resolution person, but sitting down to set goals, make plans, and DREAM BIG – this is thrilling and I look forward to it every year! You see I wholeheartedly believe in the power of dreaming big. I’m talking about pie-in-the-sky, crazy-over-the-moon, no idea how they could ever be achieved, types of big dreams. Of course I also make some smaller goals, but there is something absolutely magical about having significant wishes and taking the step to write them down. This is a key element to successfully dreaming big, you must write them down.
You know how I love to make something pretty, so I thought I’d make a fun printable for us to write down our dreams and wishes for the new year. You see, I’ve seen the power of doing this in my own life again and again. When I look back at my list for 2016 I am amazed – of course some of my big dreams didn’t happen (no trip to Paris this year, for example) but other even bigger dreams like moving to a farm totally happened, and at the time that I wrote that down, I had no way for it to happen. Seriously. And yet, here I sit in Hartfield – you can read more about that journey in these posts: overcoming disappointment; God’s amazing miracles; and the Hartfield BEFORE photos.
Are there dreams in your heart that feel outrageous to you? Things you can’t even imagine happening but have a deep longing for in your heart? Something you just can’t shake, and that also scares you a little bit (or a lot)? Then I implore you to write them down, pray about them, and post them where you can see them regularly. Then take whatever steps you need to take to move toward your dreams. Put in the extra hours and the hard work. Even though you feel scared, that’s OK, keep going. Do your part, and allow God to do His.
My part in getting this farm turned out to be working diligently at my “day job” even though my heart is here on this blog. Earning a full-time income by blogging is a big dream of mine, but so far, it has not happened (you can believe it’s on my list for this year!) and as a single-mom, the stability that this job brings me has been a necessity. It means I have to work a lot of very long days since I go to the salon during the day, come home have a little bit of time with my daughter and then stay up late working here. Every spare moment is spent reading, learning, creating, and sharing – pouring my heart into this dream. Doing the hard work that only I can do, and trusting that God will meet me in it.
Now you may be thinking that ‘dreaming BIG’ isn’t for everyone. Well, you’re right and wrong. You see it’s true that many people don’t see their big dreams come to life, but I believe it is because they gave up and didn’t press through the hard times. Hard times are no fun. They are discouraging, they are lonely, they are frustrating, and yet, if you will not give up, if you will press on, an amazing reward awaits. I believe this with my whole heart and I saw it this year when God placed me in my honest-to-goodness dream home.
I’ve seen glimmers of real hope for my 2017 goals of earning a full-time income from my creative passions and I can’t wait to see what God will do in this journey. In the meantime, I do have to continue pushing through the emotions of doing things I’d rather not be doing. But I know that God is using this to refine me, to improve my patience and discipline, and that with Him, nothing is wasted. So I choose to do my best, to be a blessing at my job, to be thankful, and I strive to be content while I’m on this journey.
Some days are better than others of course, but by keeping my goals posted where I can see them, it helps me to not lose perspective. To remember why I’m making the sacrifices I’m making. I have not arrived at my final destination, but I have come far enough to be able to tell you without a doubt that big dreams truly can come true.
Of course there are no guarantees and I do believe we must submit all our hopes and dreams before God. Let Him lead. But when we do that – I know He will dazzle you. His word is TRUE. I hope you will take hold of that, grab a pen, write down your heart’s desires, and present them to God. Then, show up, do your part, and don’t give up. Prepare to be amazed. Look, on purpose, for God in the everyday moments of your life and I believe you will see Him leading you to places that you had once only dreamed of.
