Can you believe that the 4th of July is next week? I don’t know where the time goes. It’s Independence Day next week and I’m sure it will be Halloween before we know it! Well, no matter how fast it’s all going… I’m SO excited to share my 4th of July celebration with you! I had so much fun pulling this party together. I love old-Hollywood musicals and one of my all-time favorites is The Music Man with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. It is a Star-Spangled, Technicolor Extravaganza and was very much and inspiration to me for this party!
I love the old-Americana feeling of that by-gone era. To recreate it I used ticking striped fabrics, bushels of apples, blue bandanas and lots of American Flags for a full-on Patriotic Backyard Bash! I shop for party decor year-round. Whenever I see something, as long as it’s not too expensive, I pick it up knowing I will one day find the perfect use for it and I always store my treasures safely in tubs to keep them fresh for years to come. These flag banners (from Martha Stewart Crafts) are a great example of this. I’ve had them for a few years now and not only have they held up superbly but they are equally at home as a table centerpiece or as a festive garland on the front porch! Similarly the wire stands holding the apples have been in my collection for years. They are such a neutral staple that I can dress them up or down – fill them with flowers, fruit, wine corks and more! When I spotted them in the craft store I scooped them right up. Finding pieces like this really makes entertaining easier in my opinion. It allows you to “shop your house” when you’re in a rush rather than run out to the store.
I love flowers, I really do – but sometimes I also like to find creative ways to make a table look festive without flowers and that’s just what I set out to do here! First I gathered my collection of white pitchers – love these! I’m always on the lookout for more. Some are old, most are new. I just buy what I like (and can afford). Then I stuffed each with a blue bandana for a bold pop of color and they helped to stabilize the lighter items in the arrangement. Next, I randomly stuck my pinwheels, medallions and a couple of star wands into the pitchers with the bandanas. Easy, easy!
Interested in making your own medallions? I’ll be sharing a tutorial soon so please stay tuned!
In the meantime, do you want to see more of this party? This celebration is featured in the Summer 2012 issue of Celebrating Everyday Life with Jennifer Carroll which you can read here or just click the image below.
I’ll be sharing a new column about ‘blogs I love’ in tomorrow’s post but then I’ll be back on Friday with more 4th of July inspiration. Speaking of new columns, I also just started a ‘Be Encouraged’ column on Tuesdays. Missed this week’s? You can check it out here.
See you tomorrow!
