How to Make an Easy & Beautiful Horse Lantern

Save This For Later

Do you or someone you know love horses? If so, then you are going to love today's project! I'm going to show you How to Make an Easy & Beautiful Horse Lantern!

I have loved horses all my life, in fact, I can't remember a time when I didn't adore them. I was blessed to be able to have my own horse and ride when I was younger although now I simply do not have time. {sigh} Hopefully one day I will be able to dedicate some time again to riding. In the meantime, I am very much enjoying watching my daughter and my niece take riding lessons and develop their own love of horses!

My niece had a birthday this week and to celebrate, I wanted to make her something extra-special. Like many teenage girls, she's absolutely mad for horses, so I knew this would be a “safe” theme to work with.

Not only is this a beautiful gift, but it's also budget-friendly and easy to make! Truly!!

Let me show you How to Make an Easy & Beautiful Horse Lantern!

SUPPLIES TO MAKE AN EASY & BEAUTIFUL HORSE LANTERN

  • SVG file (available in my shop here)
  • 12 x 12 Cardstock
  • Vellum
  • Paper Cutting Machine
  • Paper Cutter or Scissors (for cutting vellum)
  • Scoring Tool
  • Glue Stick

HOW TO MAKE AN EASY & BEAUTIFUL HORSE LANTERN

Thanks to a Paper Cutting Machine like Cricut, Silhouette, etc… this really is a simple craft.

1 DOWNLOAD + CUT

To begin, download and cut the file with your machine.

2 FOLD & SCORE YOUR FOLD LINES

I like to go ahead and fold my panels so that I have a clear understanding of where all my folds are. This will help me avoid trouble in the upcoming steps. Fold panels along score lines and use a scoring tool if needed to be sure folds are crisp.

3 CUT VELLUM

Measure your opening and cut your vellum to the width of each panel's opening. Be careful that your vellum does not touch your fold lines – it will make it extremely difficult for your lantern to keep it's shape if there is “extra” paper and glue along the folds.

4 ATTACH VELLUM

Use a glue stick to add glue to the border of the “WRONG SIDE” of your lantern panel. I also added a bit of glue to a few center elements as well to help it be more “stable.”

Place the vellum onto the glue and press to seal. If there are any loose areas, carefully add a bit of glue to that section and press the vellum down again.

5 ATTACH PANELS

Because I wanted this lantern to be large, I made it in 2-panel sections.

To join them, simply run glue along one tab and attach the 2nd panel to the first by overlaying one panel over the glued tab. Repeat with the second tab by folding the panels inward. You can easily see what I mean by watching the video below.

Voila! An Easy & Beautiful Horse Lantern! A perfect gift for everyone who loves horses or if you just want to add some lovely Horse themed DIY decor!

I've put together a short video showing assembly, sometimes it's easier (for me at least!) to watch something being made then just read it… I hope this helps you feel confident that you can make this too!

SVG FILE!
Get the SVG file for this project available in my shop here.

I hope you like this project and will give it a try! It really is simple to make and adds such a sweet and feminine touch to any horse-lovers room!

I'll be creating a few more equestrian-themed designs in the future so please stay tuned!

Happy Celebrating!
