I have lots of plans and dreams in my heart, but the path to achieve them isn’t always clear to me. Can you relate to that too? Some of my goals include keeping the house tidier, learning a new language, laughing more/stressing less, things like that… those types of goals don’t tend to require too much strategizing to achieve (although I do have to be purposeful about them or they will never happen). But other goals like increasing my earnings, getting out of debt, achieving a sense of financial security, etc… this requires a deeper amount of purpose, it requires a PLAN. Recently I was
sobbing to my mom talking with my mother about my desire to earn enough doing what I love, and she told me we should do a 9 Grid. I held my kleenex in mid-air and (blearily) stared blankly at her…
Um… what’s a 9 Grid and what does that have to do with my predicament? My mom kindly patted my hand, pulled out a pen and paper and began to brainstorm with me on creating a path, a tangible plan, to help me get where I want to be. To say that I was thankful, relieved and most of all, HOPEFUL, would be a massive understatement! You see, my mom and dad are wonderful sources of information to me, especially when it comes to business. They own two successful Aveda hair salons so when they talk about ways to have a successful business, I listen. And apparently using a 9 Grid has been an integral part of how they plan and achieve success in their business. Needless to say, I was all ears!
What is a 9 Grid?
So, what is a 9 Grid? It’s just what it sounds like and SO MUCH MORE! Simply, it’s a square shape drawn on a piece of paper that is divided into 9 smaller boxes (3 rows and 3 columns equaling 9 small squares). It is very often used for team building and performance measurement by companies because it measures performance and potential and helps identify strengths, weaknesses, and how to improve. We decided to treat mine a little differently. Instead, here’s what we did:
In the center, write your goal, then in the squares around it, write a required action you need to take EVERY DAY to get you there. Each of the eight boxes bordering the center box should have one action in it. Post the sheet where you can see it DAILY and DO IT. Every day, read it, and take a step – repeat. And when it gets hard, don’t give up. If achieving our dreams were easy, we’d all be riding around on puffy pink unicorns (at least that’s my daughter’s ultimate dream scenario) but alas we aren’t because making our dreams come true is seriously hard business. But, I am committed! I have come to far to give up now, and I really want to encourage you to not give up either. WE CAN DO THIS!
To help you make your own dreams come true, I’ve made a pretty 9 Grid worksheet for you to download, print and hang up! You can print as many of these as you need for as many goals and dreams you have! Click HERE to download your personal copy.
This sheet is already making a huge impact in my work, and it is truly my prayer that it will bless you too!
