I hope you had a happy Labor Day! I really want to thank each of you all so much for your kind comments and support especially on the last post – I try to “just be myself” on the blog and it means so much to me that you all love me just as I am! I love you too!! Did you do anything special over the holiday weekend? I happened upon a few deals at Walmart and Lowes that inspired me to begin adding a few touches of Fall decorating to my front porch. Labor Day is the official end of summer for me and I don’t know about you but I’m really, really ready for Fall!
Since moving in I really hadn’t done anything with the front porch. I’ve been spending time and money on other spaces, but with Fall rolling in, I knew something had to be done. Fall is just too special and I was really excited to start seeing some positive changes here. Naturally I wanted to be as thrifty as possible and was excited by some good deals that I came across.
Pots were an important starting point for me – I like interesting containers but I don’t like the hefty price tag that often comes with them. I had found pots like this large cream Better Homes & Gardens pot earlier in the season at Walmart, they cost less than $30 each – yay! Plus they are big enough they can hold a wide variety of plants (I have triple ball Eugenia’s in these on my other porches). I was excited to see them back in stock at my local Walmart over the weekend. (This lion was a Walmart purchase a few years ago too).
This mum was also a Walmart buy – I love the orange tips on these guys – just like little pumpkins!
These red mums were on clearance at Walmart for $1.97 each. They need a little TLC but I’m hoping they’ll come around.
This cream urn is also from Walmart – I like that it is similar to, but not the same as the other one, it helps everything not be too matchy-matchy.
The itty-bitty purple mums planted here were $1 each! Woo-hoo!
When planting all these containers I had to think about color. I love mixing them – especially with something unexpected – all the yellows and golds of autumn are beautiful but by adding an infusion of purple I think it helps it feel fresh and interesting, not boring at all! I like how this planter with it’s mix of yellow, red and purple has all the elements of the planters by the steps so it adds continuity while being intriguing.
We found these pottery Jack ‘O Lanterns at Lowes and if you’ve ever had a pumpkin rot on your front porch you know what a good idea these guys are! Carved pumpkins have a short shelf life so these charmers are a great find if, like me, you want to have decorations out for a nice long time!
These purple asters are such “happy” flowers – they make me smile every time I see them! I planted these in faux whiskey barrel planters that were just under $7 each (also found at Lowes). I’m hoping they’ll hold up well because the price certainly was a good deal and they won’t rot like real wood.
I still want to add something decorative to the door but I haven’t decided what yet. There’s no roof here so whatever I add needs to be totally weatherproof. In the meantime, I think it’s a happy, welcoming space. I hope you enjoy it too! Thanks for reading and sharing!
