If you’ve never been to Old Lucketts Store in Lucketts, Virginia you may want to consider adding it to your bucket list. I’m not trying to compare it to visiting the Grand Canyon or sipping a cafe au lait while strolling along the Seine… I know it’s not quite that monumental… but if you are in to finding fabulous vintage hip furniture and accessories (especially accessories!) for your home than this place is not to be missed! But if you are planning a visit I would highly recommend scheduling it for a weekend when they have the Design House open because for me, that’s really what tips Lucketts over and above the competition. You can see the dates for the Design House (and other Lucketts events) here. What is the Design House you ask? It is a monthly interior design showcase where everything is for sale. Yes, everything. It is staged and designed in a completely over-the-top fabulous way and I’m always inspired! This month was no exception!
As we approached the house from the store we passed by cool old barn with it’s gallery of mirrors (bottom left) and the almost Narnia-like passageway (top left). How cool are the flocked trees hanging upside down?! On the front porch of the house we were greeted by the first of many, many Christmas trees to come (top right). This lion (bottom right) was near the exit and I really wanted to bring him home. Nevermind that I have positively no where for him to live (he’s bigger than my entire front porch!), I just loved him. His price tag was the only thing that stopped me… and stop me it did.
The rooms inside the house are all themed. There were a couple of especially standout rooms for me. One of which was what I dubbed the “Winter Garden” room. Oddly, despite my total lack of a green thumb, I have an abiding affection for all things garden related. I love the weathered woods, vibrant boxwoods and crisp whites of a picket fence or blooming amaryllis. All of which was thriving in this room!! Yes, that’s a picket fence garland (top left) on the Christmas tree! And small galvanized watering cans (top right) became adorable ornaments – such an easy DIY project there! These snowy white birdhouses (middle right) were a real show stopper – there was a line to get near them! I loved the old doors (middle left & bottom right) in the room and was seriously trying to figure out where I could lean one of them in my house… Not sure I’ve found the right spot yet but I’m keeping it in mind! A raw lampshade turned chandy (bottom left) – you know I’m thinking hard about this at my house!
My hands down favorite – never wanted to leave – room was the Equestrian themed bedroom. One look and I was g-o-n-e! Plaid, check. Trophies, check. Crunchy leather chair, check. Gorgeous bed with faux fur throw, double check! For me, this room had it all! I did bring home a couple of the trophies – they are reproductions and an awesome price ($49 for the large & $19 for the small) when compared to the “real thing”. I’m a little bit over the owls (I think I’ve just seen them too much, including in my own house) but otherwise I loved just about everything here! I’m a huge fan of all things Tartan so I reveled in the bits of it that were everywhere. I really wanted the plaid suitcase. I still look at it longingly in the photo… but alas, it was not meant to be for now… sniff! sniff!
Peacocks seem to be the “it” bird of the season. Have you noticed? They are everywhere! I’m planning and ode to the Peacock coming soon (stay tuned for that!). My friend Dara and I both loved this print – again, not on my list for this trip but still I had to snap a photo to remember it by. Some of the rooms positively sparkled – it seemed as if they had been sprinkled with magical fairy dust or something. You know I was delighted by that! The drapes on the back porch were another great inspiration that I thought could easily be recreated at home if you were DIY minded! The painted chair silhouette could be sketched onto a plain drapery panel (or even lightweight canvas) and then once you’ve got the sketch how you want just go over with a bit of paint… It got me thinking I may want to try a smaller version of this… we’ll see. My mind is turning on some ideas – who knows what I’ll end up with but I’ll be sure to share the outcome with you!
If you don’t live near Lucketts but would like to get a piece or two of the magic, they have an online store which sells a few select items. Check it out here.
