Sweet Jingle Bells! The countdown is on – less than 10 days ’til Christmas! Need a creative, inexpensive, AND stylish Christmas craft idea? Then you’ve got to try my How to Make a Framed Chalkboard Ornament tutorial. I featured these on my Flocked Shabby Chic Christmas Tree and they added the perfect amount of drama to the tree. They are not only pretty ornaments on a tree though… Imagine how sweet these could be as tags on a package, or place cards at your table? Best of all, they can be used year-round, and they take mere minutes to make. Here’s how I made mine:
First, you need to gather your supplies. Here’s what I used:
- Mini ornate frames
- Silver Pipe Cleaners
- Chalkboard paper
I found these frames last year at Michaels Craft Store in their Dollar Bin area. I had been given that tip by my friend Lucy from Craftberry Bush when I saw them on one of her Christmas trees. Of course, I instantly fell in love with them and rushed out to find some! Last year I hung them on my Plaid Christmas tree with plaid paper inside, but this year I wanted a different look and the chalkboard idea was born!
- To make these open the back of the frame and pull out the clear plastic “cover” and lay it on a piece of chalkboard paper and trace with chalk. Repeat this step for as many frames as you need to fill.
- Cut out the oval pieces and place in the frame. I put the plastic covers behind the chalk paper so that if I want to use them in the future they will be right there.
They have little stands on the back which are great for a table, but not so much for hanging from a tree, especially when I want them to hang in a different direction. Pipe cleaners to the rescue! Simply twist a pipe cleaner around the frame stand (near where it joins the back of the frame) and be sure to leave a loop for hanging on branches.
These frames are extremely light weight which make them ideal for hanging on the tree but you’d never guess that from their ornate, carved look.
I hope you will add this to your holiday crafting list either this year or next. 🙂
