I know we’ve been talking a lot about Valentine’s Day lately but did you know that this Sunday, February 10th, is the Chinese New Year?! This year will be the year of the Snake. I don’t know much about how the animals relate to the different years but I do know that I was born in the year of the Ox which, according to Chinese legend, means I have a strong character, am fearless and have a heart of gold. Well, I must say, that sounds lovely to me!
The celebration always begins with a big “Reunion” meal and one of the traditional dishes is dumplings – which are also a sign of prosperity. Now, I love a good dumpling, whether it’s a good old Southern dumpling or a Chinese dumpling – I’m in! Happily, we have just gotten a new Trader Joe’s in our town and they have delicious dumplings in their freezer section that I have begun to keep on hand for all dumpling emergencies! (As in, I need a delicious and savory carb in the next 5 minutes – type of emergency. Do you have those too?) While it would be a much more healthy alternative to steam these dumplings, I must admit that I love to fry them up in a bit of oil and serve them with a jarred dipping sauce. Talk about delicious, instant gratification! The speediness of this makes these one of the absolute easiest appetizers – or if you make several you can turn this into an entree – you could ever want to whip up in no time flat!
If you decide to have a little Chinese New Year’s celebration this weekend in honor of the holiday, I hope you’ll include a dumpling or two in your meal!
