I know, I know, you’re probably thinking, “What’s going on here – Christmas, really? Jennifer’s gone crazy! It’s October for Pete’s sake!” Well, I won’t deny that I’m probably a little crazy, and yes, I know it’s only October, and typically I’m not one to rush these things – but I’m super excited to part of ANOTHER blog tour! And this one’s all about Christmas! My friend Diane (from An Extraordinary Day) has invited me to be part of a terrific group of 31 bloggers for a celebration of 31 days of Handmade Christmas ornaments! Awesome, right?! Scroll down to the bottom of this post for all the links.
When Diane reached out to me about this blog tour, I was excited and nervous. I had just finished photographing my dining room for the Fall tour and my head wasn’t ready for Christmas yet – so I prayed and just started writing down ideas. Next thing I knew I had enough ideas for my own 31 days of ornaments – an idea I’d love to do with you but it will have to be later in the season (there’s too much fun left for us to have with Fall!) so consider this an appetizer for more holiday fun to come. Knowing that I didn’t have much time helped me to focus my ideas and so I dove into my craft room to see what I could pull together quickly. I came across these wooden letters which I had bought last year at Michaels Craft Store but never used. Then I also found these cute scalloped cards which I had gotten at Staples last year when I wrote this Handmade Holiday post. I’m still in love with all things chalkboard and these cards remind me of that (although they are not chalkboard cards) and I started to get an idea. How about a “JOY” ornament? I feel so joyful to be part of the tour that this felt perfect!
Here’s what I used to make this ornament:
• Heavy Black Card Stock – Mine has a scalloped edge and I purchased it at Staples Office Supply
• Wooden Letters – Mine came from Michaels Craft Store
• Decorative Ribbon – Mine is from Michaels Craft Store
• Glitter, Glitter Glue, Brush – Also from Michaels Craft Store
• Hole punch and Hot Glue Gun
Brush glitter/craft glue onto letters and sprinkle liberally with glitter. Repeat with each letter. Allow to dry.
Punch two holes in your card stock for attaching the ribbon.
Determine placement of your letters on your paper and then use the hot glue gun to attach your letters to the sign. Allow to dry.
Attach ribbon to sign by looping it through the holes and tying each end. Hang and enjoy!
And there you have a sweet and surprisingly simple craft that you can whip up in 5 – 10 minutes, seriously! I definitely want to make more of these. I think it would be cute on a wreath, as a gift embellishment, hanging anywhere around the house, and of course several on the tree! It could even hang on a wine bottle as a hostess gift… so many possibilities! Plus you could use a metallic pen to write a special sentiment to the recipient on the back of the card, so it’s a gift card too.
Especially at the holidays, I like having handy ideas like this to turn to if I find myself in need of a quick gift or decor item and this is great for last minute emergencies like that. I hope you are inspired and I hope you’ll check out these other amazing crafters on the tour, here’s the list:
