I remember when I first heard this encouraging quote many years ago I was really and truly struck by it. I was a teenager and was just beginning to comprehend that I wasn’t the only person having “drama” in their life. So often we can be (or at least I can be!) easily fooled into believing that we are alone in our struggles and it is in the awareness that we are not alone that I believe true freedom lies. There have been countless times when I’m out and about and run into someone who is clearly having a bad day that I will try to extend “extra” mercy because this quote will pop into my head. Rather than be rude back, I will try to be extra patient. I can’t say I do this 100% of the time but I do try to do it more often than not.
“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”
This quote has been attributed to Plato, Ian MacLaren and others. Based on this article, I’m going with Ian MacLaren. But no matter who said it there is a powerful truth in these words. I believe that kindness, grace and mercy are among the most valuable and powerful gifts that we have to share with one another.
I hope that as you are going about your day today, that you will spread kindness and joy through a smile, holding a door, giving a gift, maybe even buying a coffee for the person in line behind you at Starbucks! Wherever you find yourself, I hope you will be a blessing to those around you!
